Reward offered for information in horse abuse case

An aging and decrepit white horse found abandoned in a pasture south of town this past weekend has triggered a criminal investigation seeking its owner or owners, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Monterey County said Wednesday.

An anonymous caller tipped off the SPCA to the presence of the mare in a field near 800 River Road on Monday. Responding to the call, humane officers found the animal suffering from infected wounds, arthritis and starvation.

Dr. Heather Baker of Monterey County Equine, Inc., examined the horse and had it put down Monday evening after discussion with SPCA authorities.

The SPCA for Monterey County will award $1,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case. Representatives have asked that anyone who recognizes the horse call 373-2631 or 422-4721 ext. 213. They guarantee confidentiality.
